I Believe in Small Group Ministry

I once served a church where members proudly wore lapel buttons that said, “I believe in Sunday school.” Well, so do I. Do you?

One of the clearest marks of a healthy church is a healthy small group ministry. We gather together each week to worship, but we grow best in circles, not just rows. Whether you call it Sunday school, life groups, community groups, or something else entirely, this kind of ministry provides a place where God’s Word is studied, friendships are formed, prayers are shared, and lives are transformed. It’s one of the primary ways people move from simply attending church to becoming mature disciples of Jesus Christ. If we’re serious about making disciples, we have to be serious about small groups.

Why Small Groups Matter

Healthy churches are always planting new small groups. New classes and groups create room for new people, new relationships, and new opportunities for spiritual growth. They help reach every stage of life in ways few other ministries can. From preschoolers learning their very first Bible stories to adults growing deeper in their faith, small group ministry remains one of the most effective discipleship tools God has given the local church.

I’ve had the joy of watching this firsthand. At my own church, Mountain Chapel, we’ve started four new Sunday school classes in the past three years, including a new preschool class and a new adult class this year alone. Every time a new class launches, I’m reminded that growth isn’t just about numbers. It’s about more people finding a circle where they can be known, cared for, and pointed toward Christ.

A Question for You

So let me ask you the same question I’d ask anyone in my own congregation: Are you plugged into a small group?

If not, I want to encourage you, wherever you live and whatever church you call home, to make finding one a priority. Talk to your pastor. Ask a friend who attends church what their group is like. Visit a class as a guest before committing. Most churches would love to help you find the right fit, and many have a season, like a fall kickoff or a “promotion Sunday,” that makes it especially easy to jump in.
